Weddings

WEDDINGS/HOLY MATRIMONY: The sacrament of Holy Matrimony is available to both same- and opposite-sex couples.  You don’t have to be an Episcopalian or church member to have your wedding at St. George’s. However, the Episcopal Church requires that at least one of the parties be a baptized Christian, that the ceremony be attested by at least two witnesses, and that the marriage conform to the laws of the state and the canons of the Church. The member of the clergy who will solemnize the marriage typically meets with the couple on several occasions prior to the service to discuss the meaning of Christian marriage in the couple’s life. When one of the parties has been previously married and divorced, the consent of the diocesan bishop must be obtained prior to solemnization of the marriage. For non-parishioners, we charge $500 for the use of the space for the day.  This includes the courtyard (with a river view), the John Brown room (reception or changing area), Parish Hall restrooms, and the sanctuary, as well as cleaning costs. The sanctuary comfortably seats 200.  Couples arrange and pay for their own music. Weddings are not usually scheduled for Advent (the 4 weeks of prayer and reflection before Christmas) or Lent (the 40 days of self-examination and penitence before Easter). Please call or email the church office, preferably six months in advance, to discuss your wedding plans.
